Surgery for Aima

On the 9th of October 2022 ex-students from my Junior secondary school (Holy Trinity Grammar school Okwuvo, Delta state) decided to organize a get together. The venue was at Jogan resort in Warri, Delta state. The turn up was not massive so we decided to come up with some fun things to do before heading back home. We then came up with a game and it was during one of the games that I missed my step and fell. I could not get up afterwards and a friend had to carry me on her back. We went to a local masseur immediately thinking it was just a dislocation that will be corrected after a short while. The woman applied raw hot water on my leg and even had to get them to hold me down as she massaged the leg. During my second visit they used a clean razor and made tiny cuts on the leg, her reason for doing this was to remove bad blood. It was tied with some local herbs afterwards and they also gave me some to drink as well. I was placed on treatment which took one week but I noticed that my leg was getting worse and swollen. I told my mom that I needed to see a doctor immediately.

My dad’s friend introduced him to a physiotherapist who examined the leg and asked us to do an X-ray. Then he directed us to an orthopedic surgeon at Bendel Clinic in Warri. I was asked to do another X-ray and then the conclusion was that I had a fracture. So he told us he will not advise us to use a cast because of Early stage of Arthritis. The final conclusion was inserting a metal in my leg to heal the crack. A date for the surgery was fixed and it took place on the 21st of October 2022, after the surgery I stayed in the hospital for two weeks. I was discharged and made an appointment to enable them remove the stitches and the cast. When I returned, the nurse removing the stitches cut me and did not properly dress the wound. She wrapped the leg with crepe bandage and asked me to get full leg braces that rotate (this will enable movement of the leg).

Weeks after I noticed an unbearable pain in the affected leg (it was like someone set the leg on fire); this made me uncomfortable. One morning I woke up to my mom screaming, only for me to see that my leg was bleeding and my duvet was soaked. So we went back to the hospital that same day and they did a test. The doctor placed me on antibiotics. However,  we  decided I will not be admitted because of the expenses. The doctor then prescribed Antibiotic injections for two weeks and we got a private nurse that came to the house to give me the injections daily. The leg improved but it started bleeding again from another opening but the nurse treating me at home said there was nothing to panic about. She did the wound dressing till the leg healed completely.

I started Physiotherapy late January 2023, which was difficult because of pain. The physiotherapist came to the house, but he later advised we come to the hospital (NNPC), since they were now open to the public. Based on his advice I registered with NNPC clinic where I went for physiotherapy three times a week. I was managed by the physiotherapist until the pain went but bending and stretching the affected leg was a problem. They did a manipulation under anesthesia, but it was not so effective. The head physiotherapist suspected that the metal was restricting the leg from moving freely. He then sent a report to the manager who advised that we should wait for one year before taking out the metal.

The metal was removed from my leg on the 5th of October 2023. And they started physiotherapy immediately after I left the theater. They managed the leg to a certain stage, and frequently had my dressing changed to prevent infection. The leg was always bleeding after physiotherapy, so they advised me to stay home for a while till the wound healed properly. I continued physiotherapy after the wound was properly healed, and stitches were removed from the second operation. At this stage, they began training me to sit in the car and bend my leg to a certain stage alongside some other exercises.

About December 2023, the physiotherapist confirmed that there was no progress to the leg. I then registered with Lily Clinic, Warri, the surgeon asked me to continue with physiotherapy and see him after three months. I continued with physiotherapy where I was taught how to use the stairs, walk properly with a walking stick and said I should purchase special slippers and add an extra pad to that of the affected leg. My mom passed away in May 2024, before I could return to see the surgeon at Lily Clinic, Warri.

Omosede Global Foundation met with Aima in May 2024 and took her to our orthopedic specialist where a detailed x-ray/Ultrasound was done on her left leg. It was observed that the leg was infected and the only way to remedy the situation was a knee replacement surgery. Aima is in excruciating pain most of the time and has had to take pain medication to help relieve her. The cost of surgery and all expenses is 6 Million Naira of this amount 2.178 Million Naira has been raised by family. We need your help and support to get Aima back on her feet so she can be independent and free from disability.  In the cause of planning and preparing Aima for Surgery, her dad passed away barely a year after her mother. Aima needs to get her health back free from disability and pain to be independent and capable of taking care of herself.

Please Save Smart

This serves as official update to Inform the Foundation’s Trustees and Partners of Smart’s Leg Ulcer.

Omosede Global Foundation continues treating all its patients through the Covid-19 and supporting families to get healthcare, including counselling, educating them on best practices and precautions.

Many of you who have followed up on the Foundation over the last year, know Smart. He had a leg ulcer which the foundation took responsibility for and has been treating for the last 15 months since May 23, 2019. His leg ulcer was 12 years old at the time we got him and had suffered setbacks over the same period due to mismanagement. The last five years of the same period Smart was responsible for treating himself. While treating himself a section of the tibia broke off.

The Foundation managed his leg with the best medicine both oral and topical preparations in treating the ulcer. We had good results and hopeful by the end of this year, Smart will have the surgery to straighten his leg which had contracted due to infection. The leg filled, muscles formed, and skin began to grow back. The outer part of his left thigh was doing well. The Foundation also pays for his rented room and utilities, while St. Vincent de Paul continue to assist with food, clothes and stipend until he was able to care for himself.

A month ago, the inner section of the leg where the bone broke off reopened exposing the bone. An x-ray was immediately ordered by the Foundation’s consultant, Dr. Kenneth Atoe to determine the integrity of the bone if it will hold Smart’s weight when he eventually stands. The x-ray showed that the entire length of the remaining bone was infected. The orthopedic specialist was immediately consulted who assessed the lesion and also reordered another x-ray of the thigh and discovered that the bone could not be saved, the bone was completely infected and was progressing towards the good bone in his thigh. Smart has been sick, unable to eat and lost weight. The orthopedic specialist recommended surgery (Above knee amputation) as the only way to save Smart’s life.

Smart’s condition deteriorates every day he does not get surgery and is in a lot of pain. We keep treating to prevent an acceleration of the infection until he gets surgery. The Foundation has counselled and explained to Smart his situation. Smart has agreed to surgery.

Please see the progressive deterioration of Smart’s left leg below.

We need your help to raise N600,000.00 (Six Hundred Thousand Naira). N500,000.00 will pay for surgery, medicine and hospital stay. N100,000.00 for his feeding and to adjust his living quarters to suit his new condition after surgery. We will also need to help with his basic needs until he can cope.

This is painful and sad. Smart put up a good fight and the Foundation did its best. It is important that Smart get surgery by August 9, 2020 or we will loose him.
